Eric Saczawa
Department:
Career Services
Biography:
I started working in Career Services / Higher Education in 1998 when I accepted an administrative support position in a large Career Development Office at Smith College. Little did I know that I had started not just a job but a career - I loved the mission of the department and employer. I decided to develop myself in a way that would allow me to be an effective Career Services administrator and more importantly, a helpful resource for students. Since 1998, I have held four positions in Career Services, for three different colleges: Smith College, Clark University, and now Becker. I also obtained my Masters of Science in Professional Communication from Clark in 2008. I am a big believer in the high touch, high tech philosophy. I try to deliver Career Services in a way that combines technology and relationship-building as part of the experience.
What's unique about your program?
Career Services is probably one of the few departments that gives in-class lectures and presentations that span several majors at Becker. No matter what major/field you are in, you need to have a professional resume, know best practices for cover letter writing, and practice your interview skills.
What do you like most about working at Becker College?
I enjoy the small, community atmosphere at Becker. It is easy to form relationships with students, staff, faculty, and administrators who cross multiple departments. The Becker employees are extremely dedicated to helping students academically, socially, and administratively.
What's new and exciting in your field?
Career Services is an ever-changing field. There are always new technologies and trends to keep up with. And it can vary depending on the economy, current political landscape, and more. Through it all, the one thing that will never change: relationships are key. Building relationships with professionals in your field of choice will be much more important to the start and continuation of a successful career than any job search web site.
